I gave up full time teaching in 1999 to pursue journalism. I had had a longish period in my 20s working as a press officer and some success getting things written and published while teaching, so it was not such a leap in the dark. Over the past seven years I have contributed to the Guardian and the TES writing about a wide variety of subjects. My principal interests are film, literature and history/heritage. I also have carved a niche writing on I.T. in education, particularly games in ed., digital creativity and video conferencing. I am attending the NESTA Uploading Innovation event as a reporter, with a commission in the bag from the Guardian. One of my most recent articles concerned social networking and the extent to which schools were exploiting the opportunities for learning that it offered despite the perceived risks. This is a theme I can imagine revisiting a lot over the next year. Several commissions underway involve net safety for children.
