Mixed thoughts as I look back at the 'In the Wild' event after a weekend's reflection. Thanks to Steve and the team for bringing together a great and inspiring bunch of people. It was one of those days that made you feel really good about the community in which you find yourself working - but also took you off in other new directions and meeting new people as all good conferences should.
On the downside - those chairs. First, they they looked so incongruous - gold, awards ceremony seating looking more at home in the Dorchester/Quaglino's ballroom that the funky foyer of oh so cool Channel 4. Familiarity did not bring enchantment, either, the longer one sat on them the more surreal/confined it seemed. One is torn between admiration for Steve's enterprise in getting so many interesting things, talks and people in one relatively small space, and the memory of claustrophobia that it entailed. It is great to get students to such an event - but it must have been even more challenging for them to sit and listen for such extended periods without authentic opportunities to contribute. And that was the other abiding thought - for a media company that prides itself on being challenging and 'out there' there was a very traditional and backward-looking format for the event. Though given the number of people and the space available I can understand the pressures! But am I glad I went... of course! And looking forward to the next opportunity too...Tony
Format of the conference
I agree with Tony about the format of the conference. I was very keen to talk to people about what they were doing and found it difficult to choose who to join during the last session having been given only one opportunity in the day apart from the lunch break. Of course it's difficult to have a more interactive format, but with this website, it would be relatively easy to share everyone's sessions online afterwards so you could see what you'd missed.
I realised that the best speakers were those who told a story and painted a picture with their choice of words!
format
Thanks for your feedback Sheila and Tony! I am not sure if you have been to one of our event is the past? The format of the day was a a whole lot more orderly than usual. I actually prefer more self organising formats and will certainly have more opportunities to do this at our next events on well being, digital literacy and in the new Uploading... series
Conference communication
Hi Steve!
Perhaps I should think about conferences in this way - what happens on the day stimulates a whole lot more communication in the days that follow.... and of course the kind of work we do at Net.Mentor is all about communication! I'm very interested to hear that you're organising an event about wellbeing. We're currently working with a school for Deaf children where the staff have communication wellbeing issues. Here is where two worlds (Deaf and hearing) work together and at times collide. Their wellbeing utterly depends on the quality of communication and the work with these people is fascinating. If you have a speaker slot available at the conference, I'd be very interested in taking it to talk about communication wellbeing.
We're also working on an mlearning project relating to teenage pregnancy which is proving an interesting challenge - introducing digital literacy in a field which has traditionally been face to face...
